Why is the F250 so hard to insure?

I just bought a 2012 XLT and I don’t plan to use it daily, so I thought I’d try Hagerty for a lower-cost insurance option. But when I tried to sign up, the F250 wasn’t listed in their dropdown—though the F350 and F450 were. I called them, and they said they don’t insure that model.

I also tried Policy Genius, but got nothing there either. I have USAA for my other cars and home, but I don’t want to pay $200/month for a truck I’ll only use about once a month. Is there something about the F250 that makes it a problem for insurance companies?

I’ve owned several F250s and have never heard of this issue. Hagerty is usually for classic cars, though, so I’d try Progressive, The General, or Elephant Auto. I got full coverage on my 03 dually for $82 a month through Progressive.

I didn’t have much time to shop around because I needed to get it inspected and registered with a tight deadline.

Then start looking around now. You can always cancel and get a refund on the current policy.

Shopping for insurance takes less time than posting about it on here these days.

You can get quotes from Progressive or Allstate online in 5 minutes, even from your phone, and activate the policy right away.

I’ve literally never heard of anyone not being able to insure an F250.

I was able to insure it, but I was surprised that Hagerty excluded the F250 while still covering the F350 and F450, and Policy Genius came back with nothing.

Hagerty only covers trucks that are 1995 or older unless they’re particularly collectible. A 2012 isn’t a classic yet.

But my coworker has a 2004 F150 insured with them, plus they listed the F350 and F450 in the dropdown for that year.

I’ve got two vehicles insured with Hagerty, a 1935 model and a 90s motorcycle. According to their site, for pickup trucks, they need to be 1998 or older unless it’s considered collectible. Your 2012 isn’t collectible yet. Your coworker might be lucky, but if he uses it to haul stuff or gets into an accident, Hagerty could drop him or refuse the claim because it wasn’t used as a collector vehicle.

Yeah, I figured since the 5.4 Triton 3-valve isn’t exactly collectible.

Eventually, maybe. I got denied with my 04 Lariat 6.0 diesel because I said I used it for hauling sometimes. I don’t have that truck anymore. Now I just use recreational insurance for vehicles I barely drive, and it’s way cheaper. I have one car that only sees about 2500 miles a year.

Are you familiar with the 3-valve 5.4 Triton?

I’m not super familiar with it. I don’t think the heads change the collectible value much, but I’m no expert.

It’s a notoriously bad engine. When it fails, most mechanics won’t even attempt repairs; they just quote you for a new engine.

Man, those engines are a pain. Had a buddy swap his out, cost a fortune.

Hagerty does insure newer vehicles under ‘modern classics’ with some requirements, like having a primary vehicle and limiting mileage. My cousin works there, so I’ll ask her about the F250.

That might be how my coworker does it. He’s also got a 2005 Shelby Mustang.

No worries, I wasn’t trying to say you were wrong, I’m just surprised this is even a problem.
