I’ve noticed rust starting to show through the paint on my OBS 7.3. Is there any hope of saving this or is it too far gone? I plan on keeping the truck forever, so I’m open to repair suggestions.
Most of the time when rust gets to this point, the metal underneath is usually too far gone. It’ll likely need a cut-and-weld job to repair.
Sometimes you get lucky if it’s just moisture trapped, but judging by the picture, this doesn’t look like one of those cases.
@Keller
This isn’t what I wanted to hear, but it’s what I expected. Since I’m keeping this truck long term, I guess it’s time to get some quotes and deal with it sooner rather than later.
For now, you can spray some used engine oil on it to slow the rust down a bit.
Mine is starting to do the same thing on my NBS. Following this thread to see what advice people give.
I don’t have much to add, but this truck is absolutely gorgeous.

Thank you! I try my best to keep it looking good. It’s frustrating that the rust popped up, but the rest of it is holding up well!
If you’re not ready for a full repair, coat it with fluid film or wool wax to slow the rust down for now. Just keep in mind that what you’re seeing is probably 2-3 times worse than it looks. Once rust starts, it spreads quickly, and cutting it out is the only real fix.
@Ridge
Appreciate the advice! I’ll coat it for now since I’m not ready to tackle the repairs immediately.
