I’m looking at a used 2013 F350 6.7. The previous owner recently had the CP4 and EGR cooler replaced at a dealership. I spoke to the service advisor, and they said the CP4 hadn’t completely failed—there was no metal found when replacing the fuel filters.
Could the fuel system still be at risk after replacing the CP4? Should I be cautious about purchasing this truck?
I’ve replaced CP4 pumps that failed the high-pressure test but didn’t contaminate the system with metal. To be sure, you’d need to pull the PCV and VCV. There’s always some risk with a CP4, but at least the replacement part has a 2-year warranty.
It really depends on why the CP4 was replaced. Some pumps just can’t build the 5,000 PSI needed to start but don’t shed metal. If the pump failed in a way that contaminated the system, though, everything in the fuel system should have been replaced.
