This truck is a 6.4, and I’ve heard these are horrible, but this one has been tuned and had the EGR and DPF deleted. Does that change how reliable the engine is, or will it eventually also give me problems?
There’s a reason Ford only made this motor for 2 years. Stay far away.
Three, 2008-10 inclusive. But yes, the 6.4 is one to avoid whenever possible.
Oh, they knew it was bad. Dealers were flooded with massive recalls right after it came out. My father owned one, and it was on engine #3 when he sold it.
DO NOT get a 6.4 Powerstroke. They can’t be healed like the 6.0. It will definitely give you problems.
6.4’s are awful from the crank up and cannot be saved. They also get 10mpg.
Deleted, I get 19mpg.
Those trucks make great Cummins swaps.
The 6.4 will give you problems. Not ‘eventually’; it WILL happen. Stick to the 7.3 or 6.7 Powerstroke.
By the way, I know $20k is super high. I was able to get it down to $12k. Just wondering if it would be worth it.
I wouldn’t take that truck at any cost. Run, don’t walk.
Full disclosure: I’ve replaced the motor at 100k under warranty, but it’s run well since deleting the EGR and tuning.
The 6.4 is the most unreliable engine ever put in a modern pickup truck. Spend a little more and get a 6.7 or a 7.3.
Bought a DPF-deleted and tuned 6.4. An injector came apart and trashed the engine. Spent a fortune on a new engine, upgraded turbos, and other parts. Now it’s reliable, but I wouldn’t do it again.
I’ve decided it’s best to save myself the trouble and not risk spending all that money on something with that bad of a reputation.
Good decision. If you can afford it, the 6.7 is a great engine. The 7.3 is excellent too.
