Is your 7.3 powerstroke randomly shutting off or won’t start? Check your pigtails first

For me I was inspecting the fuel bowl for a fuel leak when the engine suddenly shut off. I removed the fuel bowl to fix the leak and checked the IPR valve pigtail, which had a wire that pulled right out. The truck had been shutting off unexpectedly while driving and sometimes wouldn’t start at all. Replacing the CPS didn’t help. I’m glad I noticed this issue.

Nice one. I am trying to diagnose a no-start issue with my '96. It won’t start only when it is cold, and the WIF, fuel filter, and engine temp lights flash. If I drain the fuel bowl, it starts up without any problems. Once it warms up, the no-start issue disappears. I have replaced one bad ground off the GP relay, but that didn’t help; everything else looks good.

I will dig deeper into the troubleshooting, but for now, I will just keep pouring one out for the diesel gods. I am glad you figured yours out, I love those lightbulb moments when everything clicks.

That wire harness is technically a maintenance item.

Remember to connect the valve cover gasket. Before I realized the silly connection had come loose, I had replaced all of my injectors. On that one, it felt like a real boob.
