Hey all, my truck just hit 338,000 miles and I am wondering if this amount of blow by is normal for that mileage. I’ve heard mixed things.
Seems pretty reasonable for 338k. At least the oil cap isn’t dancing yet!
Only worry about blow by if you’re having driveability or cold start issues. If it’s running well, just let it be.
That’s nothing. Keep running it.
As long as the oil cap is on, the crankcase blow by is handled by the CDR valve.
Crankcase Depression Regulator.
Hammer down and keep an eye on your EGTs!
Sounds like it’s brand new!
Not perfect, but it’ll definitely keep running for a while.
What’s the long-term fix for blow by? New piston rings?
Yep, new rings are the fix.
Mine’s got a little less blow by at 275k, so I’m feeling good about it till then.
That’s really not bad. My 2000 7.3 has a bit more blow by, but it’s also at 423k.
When my 7.3 lost a cylinder, it launched the oil cap, and I never found it again!
My third 7.3 was a 2001 with 497k miles and had zero blow by. My first was a 97 with 430k, and it ran great. I’ve also had a 97 with a 95 engine in it. Nothing to worry about here.
Blow by just means it runs better when you work it hard.
That’s not blow by; that’s just normal diesel burps.
So are you saying my 7.3 needs a rebuild because it has 400,000 miles and no blow by?
Give that bad boy an overhaul and you’ll get another 300,000 miles out of it!
