Is the Ford Territory Diesel really that bad?

I’m thinking about buying a 2011 Terry diesel with 151,000 km on it. I’ve read so many mixed reviews—some people love it, but others say the diesel engine is unreliable and expensive to maintain. I’ve already ordered a pre-purchase inspection, and the mechanic said it’s been well-maintained.

Still, I’m a bit hesitant because of all the negativity online. I know I’ll need to replace the timing belt soon, and I’m planning to do oil and filter changes as well, which will cost about $1.5k.

Anyone have positive experiences with the Terry diesel? Or is the internet just being an echo chamber of bad reviews? Thanks for the help!

It’s not the engine itself—it’s the running gear. They’re based on the BA Falcon, which had a ton of issues. For example, I went through multiple front brake discs, and the handbrake was always squealing. Gearbox, air-con, switches, diff clunk… the list goes on.

Also don’t forget the front ball joints.

None of that applies to the SZ models—those issues were with the earlier Terrys.

Front ball joints were updated in the 2009 models, so they’re now more of a regular wear-and-tear item.

I had a 2012 Terry diesel and it was great. Only had a couple of issues: a center bearing failed (cost $300 to fix), and the center dash would freeze occasionally (just had to pull the fuse to reboot it). Very comfortable on long trips and economical too—got over 1000 km on a tank driving from Sydney to Melbourne.

@Vic
Same here! Had mine for 4 years and it’s been solid. Just make sure the timing belts are replaced at the right intervals, and you’ll be fine.

The SZ models are actually quite different from the BA Falcon-based ones. Most of the earlier issues were resolved. I’ve had mine for six years, and it’s been a smooth ride. Transmission can be a weak point, though.

I’ve had my SZ diesel for years and haven’t had any major issues. Regular servicing and maintenance are key. Honestly, I think some of the bad reviews come from people who neglect their cars.

Thanks for sharing! I ended up buying it, and so far, so good. I had to replace the ball joints and timing belt due to the mileage, but other than that, it’s been great.

I’d avoid the diesel. It’s a French/Ford co-production, and they’re known for issues like snapped crankshafts. Plus, the timing belt job is expensive and time-consuming. If you can, go for the Barra petrol engine instead—it’s bulletproof and cheaper to maintain.

Just to clarify, the diesel doesn’t have a DPF filter, which eliminates one common diesel headache. As long as it’s maintained, it’s a solid engine.

I’ve had no major issues with mine. It’s economical on long trips and handles well. It all comes down to regular maintenance.

My dad had a Territory on loan for work, and it was constantly breaking down—poor ground clearance, door latch failed, and transmission issues. I’d only buy one if it’s been thoroughly inspected and you’re ready to spend on repairs.
