I’m thinking about getting a new half-ton diesel truck. My fiancé loves the F-150’s design, and I’m a big fan of diesel engines. GM has the Duramax, so will Ford offer a diesel for the F-150 again?
I don’t think so. The 3.0 V6 didn’t sell well. It wasn’t great for towing compared to the EcoBoost, and while it had better mileage, the costs didn’t make sense for most people.
Yeah, diesel used to be cheaper than regular gas. The 3.0 might have worked better back then.
Fuel and maintenance costs are a factor, but the EcoBoost was still the priciest option. The diesel wasn’t really unpopular—it just wasn’t marketed much. You could only get it on higher trims like Lariat unless it was a fleet truck. It wasn’t made to out-tow the EcoBoost but to be a mid-range option with great mileage. It did that well.
My company bought several for our fleet, and they were underrated. If they’d offered it for basic trims like XL, it could’ve done better. Ford missed the mark by limiting it. Just look at how the SUV market is growing, like the Grand Wagoneer. Ford dropped the ball when they killed the Excursion years ago.
They dropped the small diesel after a few years because demand wasn’t there. You could probably find one used if you’re set on it.
I own a 3.0 diesel, and I doubt Ford will bring it back to the U.S. The PowerBoost hybrid seems to be more popular. Diesel is bigger overseas, not so much here.
I wouldn’t say Americans don’t like diesel—look at how many F-250 and up trucks are diesel. The 3.0 Duramax is doing well, too, and Chevy offers it in their SUVs. Ford could’ve done the same.
True, but F-250s aren’t as popular nationwide. And he’s comparing it to markets outside the U.S.
Full-size diesels are different. Small diesels are more about mileage and durability. Most Americans still think diesels are noisy and dirty. Chevy focuses on their small diesels because they don’t have a gas engine to compete with Ford’s 3.5 EcoBoost.
I can’t let this 300 I6 slander slide! But seriously, the 3.5 EcoBoost is solid. I’ve got the 5.0 and love it, but people rave about the EcoBoost.
I switched from a 5.0 to a 3.5 and was amazed. Now I drive a 2.7 since I mainly use my truck for the bed.
I’ve got an older 300 I6 and a newer 5.0. If I upgrade, I might go EcoBoost, but it’s hard to give up a paid-off truck that runs great.
Nope. The PowerBoost hybrid hits the MPG numbers Ford needs, and they’ve discontinued the 3.0 diesel. No new diesel plans for the F-150.
Why bother when the EcoBoost has better specs anyway?
EPA rules are killing us here. Other countries get these awesome small diesels. I’d love a Tacoma diesel!
A diesel in anything less than an F-350 doesn’t make sense. It eats up payload capacity.
Hopefully not. It’s not needed.
If you’re open to other brands, try the Duramax. I just bought one since I couldn’t get a deal on a Lightning. The highway mileage is fantastic.
Yeah, but you need to pull the transmission to replace the oil pump belt at 150,000 miles.
