I am in the process of rebuilding a 4R100 for my truck. I have rebuilt ZF5s and ZF6s before, but never an automatic, so I’ve been following a series of step-by-step videos for the teardown and assembly. Everything has matched up with my components until I reached the direct drive assembly. The transmission in the video has a 4-tab thrust washer with cutouts to position it against the drive assembly. However, my transmission doesn’t have this washer or any cutouts for it. The reference transmission is a gas 2WD, while mine is a diesel 4WD, so I’m not sure if the washer differs between them. I’ve attached a picture of both for comparison. If anyone with experience on the 4R100 could help, I’d really appreciate it.
Where is your ATRA manual?
I am inebriated, but based on the photos, it appears that you have it disassembled. Reassembling it ought to work.
I advise you to visit the Ford Truck Enthusiast Forum.
Thanks, I posted in the ford forum but I will post in that one too.
Check out “Transmission Bench” on YouTube. I think they cover that issue, model, and type. It is the best video series on the 4R100 that I’ve come across so far.
That’s his video, typically, he discusses which transmissions will have a washer or bearing in various places, but he says nothing specifically about the direct drive unit.
I have one that’s supposed to be a good transmission, but I am not entirely sure. I bought it along with an engine that was supposedly from a wrecked truck and used the engine in my truck.
