Fuel Smell in Cabin - Possible Leak?

Hey everyone,

I’ve got a 2003 7.3 PSD, and I’ve recently started smelling fuel in the cabin when the AC or air is on. It’s especially noticeable at idle or in slow-moving traffic, but not as much while cruising. I’m guessing there might be a fuel leak. Where should I start looking?

Check the valley for diesel fuel. You might need to rebuild the fuel bowl.

@Skylar
If the fuel bowl is in bad shape, would you recommend deleting it or getting a new one?

@Skylar
Thanks!

Check for leaks on the steel lines in the valley; they sometimes develop holes from vibration. Also, inspect the area where the lines pass under the GP relay bracket and check the rubber seals at the ends for wear. Don’t forget the filter drain.

+1 on this. The steel line on the passenger side in the valley, where it’s clamped with a P Clip, is often the culprit.

My ’99 never had that clip, and it wore through twice. Finally put a clip on.

Interesting! Maybe they added it later. My ’03 and a friend’s ’02 both have it. My friend’s line wore through, and mine was getting there too.

Fuel filter drain valves are a common cause for small leaks. Start by popping the hood and looking for any visible signs of a leak.

I’ve been dealing with this too. I can’t smell fuel anywhere except in the cab, and only sometimes. Thinking it might be the fuel bowl, but I don’t see any leaks.

Try using a reveal leak detection additive.

@Skylar
That’s a great idea, thank you!
