Considering replacing the engine?

I have a 2001 Ford F350 with the 7.3 engine that just had about $9,000 worth of repairs. I am considering whether replacing the engine might be a better option. I need to replace the injectors, exhaust manifold gasket, up pipes, and ICP sensor. The truck has over 390,000 miles, so I am unsure about the condition of the cylinder compression. If the injectors are going to cost around $2,000, I am wondering what it would cost to get and install a new engine myself. I estimate it would take me about a week, but I am unsure where to start with pricing engines. Also, I need to determine if the engine would be a direct drop-in or if some rebuilding would be necessary.

What is wrong with the current engine? Why not just rebuild it?

I am using a quart of oil every 200 miles and there is a lot of black soot at the exhaust. I am not experienced with engine rebuilding and am worried that if I attempt to remove mine, I might end up ruining my truck. That’s why I was thinking of assembling a new engine and having someone handle the swap for me.

A machine shop can handle most of the work for you. They can replace and clear your bearings, work on the head, hone the cylinders, and clean out the block. They can even reassemble the engine, making it ready for the intake and exhaust. Using a good engine hoist and a block stand will help the process go more smoothly.

So, should I look for a nearby machine shop that would rebuild the engine if I were to remove it or get a mechanic to do it for me?

Yes. Most people don’t do that stuff themselves. At least machining the block and heads. Also assembling a modern overhead cam head isn’t the easiest thing to do.

If you really want to give this a go I would search car-part.com for a used engine and do the swap yourself. It would be cheaper and easier.

I think customer engines are rebuilt by Jasper Engines in Indiana. They have a great reputation, and I have previously purchased a number of engines from them.

My mechanic down the street contacted Jaspers, and they mentioned that they don’t rebuild my specific engine. It didn’t seem right to me, as it doesn’t seem like an especially unique engine.
