Chevy or Ford Diesel for towing… what’s the better choice?

My fiancé and I are shopping for a diesel truck and can’t decide between the 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500 Z71 with the Duramax 6.6L Turbo-Diesel V8 and the 2019 Ford F-250 Lariat with the 6.7L Power Stroke V8 Turbo Diesel. We’ll be hauling a 13,000-pound fifth wheel and are stuck on which one to pick. Any advice? I’m totally lost here.

What’s the price difference between the trims you’re considering? If the trucks are similar in comfort and power, maybe the cost should help you decide.

Price isn’t really a big factor since they’re super close after discounts from his work and the rebates the dealers are offering.

Have you driven both trucks yet? I’ve got a Ford F-350, but I drove a buddy’s Chevy once and felt like it lacked power right away.

Yep, we’ve driven both. I like the F-250 because it feels more powerful and I’m more comfortable driving it. He likes both but leans toward the Chevy because the interior feels more user-friendly. Basically, I’m Team Ford, he’s Team Chevy, and I’m trying to stay open-minded about the Chevy side of things. I’m super set on the F-250 though.

Were both trucks stock when you drove them? Sometimes people complain about power, but they’re running tall gearing and oversized tires that mess with the feel.

Go with whichever one you feel better about. I haven’t driven the newer diesels myself, but from what I’ve seen, both engines seem solid in these trucks.

Check the payload numbers. Towing 13,000 pounds puts about 2,000–2,200 pounds on the truck bed. I’m more of a Ram fan, so I’d pick a Ram 3500 with the 6.7 Cummins. It can pull 17K, has a payload of 3,100 pounds, and a ton of torque—800 lb-ft at 1,700 RPM. Six cylinders inline are great for towing.

The Chevy Duramax with the Allison transmission is better than Ford’s setup. The 6.7 Power Stroke has some compromises that make it cheaper to produce and better for fleet buyers. Plus, Ford’s trucks aren’t even made in the U.S.

If price doesn’t matter, I’d choose the Chevy or GMC.

Super Duty trucks are built in Louisville, Kentucky.

I was talking about the drivetrain, not the whole truck. My bad for not being clear.

You’re so biased it’s ridiculous. So much of what you said is wrong. The person who posted this is asking for real advice, and you’re just spouting nonsense.

Lots of Ford fans here, huh? Let’s be real, Ford hasn’t made a good diesel truck since the 7.3.

Like someone else said, Super Duty trucks are made in the U.S.

Care to explain what those “compromises” are, or are you just making stuff up?

Here’s an article: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-trade-nafta-autos/game-of-chicken-gm-bets-on-mexican-made-pickup-trucks-idUSKBN1F42G7

It’s a year old but still relevant.

Good read, but it doesn’t change the fact that Ford’s diesel engines have had issues with longevity compared to the Duramax.
