About to buy a 2008 Ford F250

It’s an XLT Super Duty with a 6.4L V8 Turbo-Diesel.

I drove it yesterday. It only has 50k miles on it and seems to be in great condition (as far as I can tell, as a layman).

However, after doing some research, I’m worried this might not be the right truck for me.

I work from home and only put about 3,000 miles per year on my current vehicle. Occasionally, I need a truck to tow things or handle off-road situations, but that’s rare. After reading posts, I’m seeing warnings that this truck shouldn’t be “babied” and that it needs regular, heavy use—towing, hauling, and long drives.

Is this true? Would I be setting myself up for failure?

If it’s not the right choice, what would you recommend? Should I look at an F250 with a gas engine? Or even an F150? I’m open to ideas and willing to handle extra maintenance, but I don’t want to commit to a money pit.

The 6.4 is for rich, masochistic enthusiasts only. Don’t walk away—run.

Y’all have sufficiently scared me, lol.

It’s such a shame. They come in really nice trucks, and when running, they’ll blow the doors off a 7.3. But in terms of reliability and cost of ownership? Total nightmare.

@Josie
Cost is the killer. You can make them reliable and powerful, but it’s expensive. That said, you could spend less upgrading and rebuilding a 6.4 than buying a new truck. So, there’s that argument.

I have an '08 6.4 with over 200k miles. Deleting it made all the difference. But here’s the deal—don’t get one, especially with only 50k miles. Either it already has issues, or the owner is afraid to drive it much. If it’s not deleted, avoid it. The turbos often fail due to heat buildup from the DPF, and replacing them typically involves lifting the cab. Ask me how I know.

@Onyx
This is super helpful—thank you for your insight!

If you’re only driving 3,000 miles a year, you don’t need a diesel. Modern diesels need to be driven regularly to prevent issues, especially with emissions systems. A gas truck will suit your needs much better.

@Jamie
It’s not just the miles; it’s the type of miles. If 3,000 miles means highway towing, you’re fine. Otherwise, get a scanner, monitor the DPF percentage, and ensure it completes regens properly.

Don’t worry. A 6.4 will blow up regardless of how you drive it.

Lmao, I appreciate the candidness.

Please don’t buy a 6.4 Powerstroke. They’re money pits. Look into Cummins or Duramax trucks instead.

For your use case, I’d recommend a gas truck. If you’re set on an older diesel, the 6.0 Powerstroke (2005-2007) can be made reliable with some upgrades. Just avoid the 6.4 altogether.

If you need to tow more than 10,000 lbs but not crazy weight, get an F250 with the 6.2 gas engine. Otherwise, go with an F150. Modern diesels that sit around are just asking for problems.

The 6.4 is objectively one of the worst engines ever made. You don’t drive enough to justify a diesel, and the headaches of maintaining one aren’t worth it. Look into an F150 or a half-ton gas truck instead. They’ll be simpler, cheaper, and better suited for your needs.
