A while ago, my 7.3 IDI broke down and I had to get it towed. I have been troubleshooting and it seems like there’s an issue with the fuel system. I tried putting one hose from the lift pump into a bucket of diesel and disconnected the other end from the filter to check for fuel flow. After cranking it for a while and seeing no fuel, I suspect the lift pump might be bad. Before I go ahead and replace it, I just want to make sure I tested it correctly. Any help would be appreciated. I’m really worried about the possibility of having to replace the injector pump, which is quite expensive.
A helpful suggestion for making the lift pump installation simpler is to replace the rear bolt with a stud, as it facilitates the entire process. I found it quite challenging to keep the gasket in position while trying to thread the bolts without being able to see them, especially while leaning over the radiator. After that, I switched to an electric pump and wouldn’t consider going back to the mechanical version. The advantage of electric pumps is that you don’t have to deal with fuel drainback, which can lead to excessive cranking to get fuel back into the filter and injection pump. Sometimes, it requires a ridiculous amount of cranking to remove air from the lines, and if your batteries are slightly worn, this can lead to bigger issues. It’s a good idea to get a block-off plate for the mechanical lift pump and install a pusher pump on the frame rail. While the Facet Dura-Lift pumps are decent, they don’t maintain pressure and flow very well. They will function, but they barely provide enough fuel at pressure. I’ve had one for 3-4 years, and while it works, I can trigger the fuel filter light when trying to ascend a long grade at higher RPMs because the Facet Dura-Lift pumps struggle to supply enough volume at minimum pressure, which for a 7.3 is 1 psi.
Is it still the mechanical pump?
Absolutely yes it is a mechanical pump.
It definitely sounds like a lift pump. Since I installed the facet pump, I have had nothing but success. It’s amusing because the prior owner couldn’t correctly diagnose a faulty lift pump, which is how I actually got my truck for cheap. After installing the facet and avoiding the mechanical, the truck performed flawlessly.
Through a fuseable link, an electric fuel shut-off solenoid is powered. Instead of using the link, I connected it to a toggle switch. acted as a deterrent to stealing. Verify that the solenoid receives power and opens with the key in the.
Even after avoiding all obstacles save the lift pump, no fuel was being moved. His lift pump is probably broken.
