Just wanted to share the cold start on my 6.0 with a straight pipe. No smoke at all, sounds amazing! Anyone else here tried the same setup? Thoughts?
Do you remember your first AA meeting?
Love the lack of smoke. Most 6.0s I see roll coal like crazy just to barely keep up with traffic.

To be honest, I don’t fully get how these motors work. With my limited knowledge, I should be blowing black smoke when I floor it, but I’m not.
I remember my first beer
How many of you did it with one arm and a jack stand on the ground?
Your turbo VGT vanes are sticky, by the way. You can hear them moving as soon as you start it.

No, it’s actually the PCM doing that to warm up the engine faster. My truck is straight-piped too, and it does the same thing. Freaked me out the first few times when it was cold.
@Parker
They aren’t supposed to squeak like that, plain and simple. It doesn’t change the VGT’s smoothness. It swings back and forth because the PCM is looking for the right back pressure due to the sticky vanes. But you’re right, it does help warm it up.
@Rafe
So what’s the fix for this? Personally, I’d just warm it up fully and then give it some gas to see if it clears up.

If you catch it early enough, you can take the turbo off, split the housing, clean the vanes and unison ring. But if it’s been stuck too long, the unison ring can wear out, so you might need a new or reman turbo.

My thoughts exactly! As soon as the temps hit above 120, it purrs like a kitten. Once I hit my main road, I floor it and lay down a nice 20-foot mark. Clears everything out. Not sure about yours, but I make almost no smoke. That said, I’m open to hearing other opinions. There are a lot of smart people out there, and I take any advice seriously.
@Rafe
I’m not planning to buy a reman turbo. I was thinking of doing a rebuild. New vanes, new ring, billet compressor wheel, and all the rest for under $250. The only thing I’m worried about is remounting it, since I’ve only got one good arm. That’s gonna be tough.
Cool, you did something 1,320,284 other people have done.

Just to be clear, I’m not looking for sympathy or a ‘good job.’ I just love how it sounds, and I’m proud of it.
