I’ve got a tough choice here. I was all set to buy a 1999 F-250 with a professionally swapped 12v Cummins (604hp and 1026 ft-lbs on the dyno) for just under $18k. It’s basically my dream truck—completely restored, receipts for everything, ZF6 manual, custom interior, and ready to go.
But then my dad threw me a curveball. He offered to sell me his 2012 crew cab King Ranch 6.7 Powerstroke for the same price, $18k. It’s deleted and tuned for the delete, making about 450hp. The truck has 127,000 miles, great seats, but it needs new carpet and a matching tailgate.
The 1999 Fummins is what I’ve always wanted, but my dad’s 2012 is a really nice truck, and I’d be buying it from someone I trust. I just don’t know what to do. What would you guys pick?
The 1999 has a 12v Cummins and a ZF6. Everything is restored, and I’ve got receipts for all the work. I’ve always been a Cummins fan but hated the Dodge trucks. This Fummins fixes that problem.
Buying someone else’s project is always risky. Even with receipts, you never truly know the quality of the work. Your dad’s truck has good bones, and you know the history. Build from there.
Man, the Fummins is way cooler. I don’t understand why people here aren’t hyped about it. If you’re young and into unique trucks, go for the 1999. But yeah, your dad’s deal is hard to ignore. Maybe flip the King Ranch later and build your own Fummins?
It’s a no-brainer. Go with the 2012. The resale value alone makes it a smarter choice, and you won’t have the headache of dealing with someone else’s project truck.
The 6.7 is a solid engine, but the early models had issues with the CP4 fuel pump. When it fails, it can destroy the entire fuel system. If you go with the 2012, look into preventative upgrades like a Fass fuel system or switching to a CP3 pump (if possible).
The 2012 turbo can be a weak spot. The bearings are composite and wear out faster. Drive it responsibly, and it should last. If you’re planning upgrades, consider a stage 1 turbo with steel bearings.
I’d take the 1999 Fummins if the work looks clean and everything functions as it should. If there’s any hint of shortcuts or shoddy craftsmanship, I’d go with the 2012.
