I’m looking to buy a used F-250 and having a tough time choosing between two options. I’m new to diesels and could use some advice. Here’s what I’m considering:
Option 1: 2012 F-250 4D 4wd Lariat 6.7. 192,000 miles, lifted with big tires. Clean, no issues. Price: $26k
Option 2: 2015 F-250 4D 4wd King Ranch 6.7. 132,000 miles, bone stock. Full service history, clean Carfax. Price not listed.
Neither have been deleted and both seem to be in good shape. I’ve heard the 2012 might be overpriced, and the 2015 sounds like it’s fair, but I’m new to buying trucks with this many miles, so any guidance is appreciated. I’ll mainly be using it to tow a mini RV, possibly a boat in the future, and for some FFA activities.
Thoughts on which one I should go for? Any red flags? Appreciate any input!
Yep, the CP4 is a problem on all of the newer diesels, except the 2021+ Cummins. Ford and Chevy still use it, though. I thought about upgrading from my 7.3 to a 6.7, but my 7.3 is just too reliable and easy to work on.
Exactly! Even small mods can be fine, but if it’s heavily modified like some WRXs or STIs, you can bet it’s been pushed hard. Maintenance records are super important with a diesel, especially used. I’ve seen beat-up trucks with low miles and well-maintained trucks with high miles. The condition depends a lot on the previous owner.
If you plan on using the truck for towing and don’t care about the lift, think twice before buying a lifted truck. Lifts can be a pain for towing and daily driving. Also, be prepared for higher maintenance and repair costs with diesels, especially the 6.7, which often needs the cab removed for major work.
Actually, you can do a lot of work on a 6.7 without taking the cab off. I’ve pulled the transmission and even accessed the CP4 pump without removing the cab. People say it’s necessary, but it’s not always true.
Wow, $30k for a diesel with that many miles? These trucks are for people who know how to work on diesels or want to learn. If you need a reliable truck and aren’t comfortable with diesel maintenance, you’re in for a lot of work.
About the 2012… make sure you do your own research. The 2011-2012 models had some issues, like dropping valve seats. First thing I’d ask the seller is if they’re okay with you getting a pre-purchase inspection. If they say no, walk away.
