I really am trying to, but I’m a bit anxious. I knew buying this truck was a risk, but it’s also an adventure. I’m looking forward to taking the time and doing this right. I’ve given myself two days to get this done, and I think that’s realistic. I need to clean up the unison ring, clean all the mating surfaces, and make sure everything is in good shape. I also plan to put anti-seize on everything. If it’s too far gone, I’ll have to order the unison ring and veins. It might take a bit longer after that.

Upgrade the oil drain tube, and if it’s the braided line, change the oil feed line too.

Just ordered it, thanks! I also ordered the unison ring. I took a closer look at the back of the housing, and it’s definitely going to need it. I also got the high-flow banjo bolts.

@Zhen
Usually, the unison ring holds up pretty well unless the veins are sticking. The back of the housing is where all the hot exhaust gases go, so it’s always going to look a bit rough. When you take it apart, make sure you flip over the veins and check the pivot point where the little pegs go. Make sure they’re not worn down. I’ve done all three of mine, and it’s actually a fun little task!

Check the forum for 7.3 issues. A lot of people are having problems with KC turbos. Most are now going with a guy named Kent Barnes.

It’s actually a 6.0.

Hopefully, it’s a good one. I’ve recently been turned away from them. :confused:

It definitely is a good one. I bought this truck knowing it would need work. I’ve already bought all new shocks, an oil cooler, coolant filter, and I’m working on the heads now. I’ve already got most of the parts like up-pipes, down-pipes, ball joints, and axle seals.

Amen! You should inspect the under valve cover harness. You might want to replace it (or them), check the glow plugs, and make sure the GPCM is working. Start thinking about stiction eliminator and good fuel additives. Archoil or Hotshot Secret are good choices.

@Zen
Do you have a part number or a link for that?

@Zen
No, I can get them for you if you want to PM me. But FICMREPAIR would be a good first stop. Maybe check out RiffRaff as well.

@Zen
I’m having Blessed Performance send me a FICM, but the under valve cover harness is definitely something I’ll check.

@Zen
It’s not called an under valve cover harness. I got corrected on that. I was referring to both the glow plug harness and the one for the injectors. The glow plug harness tends to get brittle or chafe, so it’s worth checking before the cold weather hits. FICMREPAIR does FICM tuning too. He’s got good videos explaining it.

You mean the Facebook group that Kent Barnes moderates and kicks people out for talking about KC turbos?

Yes, but he doesn’t kick people out for talking about their turbos. There’s plenty of discussion, good and bad reviews. There’s been a lot of talk about turbos for the 7.3 truck in particular.

I left that group after 4 people told me they got kicked for simply asking Kent why his turbos are better and what he actually builds. That’s not open discussion to me.

I agree with you. Have you found a good replacement? I still enjoy the discussions there. I’m trying to figure out which route I want to take with mine. I might just do a wheel swap.
