Is the 2018 F150 3.0 PowerStroke worth it?

I have a 2019 with the 3.0 and love it, but maintenance isn’t cheap. Since it’s a niche engine, parts and service can be a hassle. Techs are often surprised the engine even exists.

How do you mean by ‘not saving money’?

@Evan
Maintenance costs are similar to a full-size diesel, and parts like filters are often out of stock. Fuel savings are real, but only if you drive a lot. It’s a great powertrain, but the running costs can catch up to you.

What’s your main reason for switching from the Ram? The Cummins is a more proven engine, and being inline makes it easier to service long-term.

I want better fuel economy, more cab space, and a softer ride.

@Evan
I’d keep the Ram. It’s a more capable truck, and if you drop the rear tire pressure a bit, the ride improves a lot. Those small diesels tend to have more issues without offering big power benefits.

I’ve got a tuned and deleted 3.0 PowerStroke, and it’s been flawless for 160k miles. The torque is great, and I get 25 mpg or more regularly. It’s a fantastic engine when properly maintained.

I just bought one with 125k km on it, and three days later the crank broke. It’s being replaced under warranty, but now I’m hesitant to keep it.

@Evan
Crank failures usually trace back to incorrect oil being used. These engines need T6 5-40, not 5-30. If you keep it, consider switching the oil and deleting the EGR for longevity.
