Hey all, I noticed a bit of blow by on my 2008 6.4 Powerstroke. It’s not intense – the oil cap just bobs around, not blowing off. Is this normal?
Sounds normal to me.
On the 6.4, some blow by is normal when cold, but it should be minimal once the engine’s at operating temperature. The rings expand a bit as it warms up.

Good to know! The video I took was right after starting it up this morning.
@Finnick
Check it again after it’s fully warmed up and see if it reduces.
Looks good now, man. How long it’ll stay that way… well, fingers crossed!

Thanks! First diesel truck here, and I know the previous owner put a lot into it. Any maintenance tips to keep it running strong?
@Finnick
Stay on top of oil and fuel filter changes. Some people stretch oil intervals, but these engines will thin the oil with fuel and cause bearing wear if neglected.
@Finnick
Honestly, best tip might be selling it while it’s still running well and getting a 6.7!
Diesel engines typically have some positive crankcase pressure. As long as there’s no power loss or bad fuel economy, you’re probably okay.

No issues with power or fuel economy, so I should be in the clear?
@Finnick
It’s normal for now, but remember, it’s leakage past the rings. Check your crankcase ventilation, just to make sure there’s no blockage.
Be grateful it’s running at all. I bought an '08 sight unseen because it had a ‘new’ motor. It arrived with antifreeze in the oil, metal in the pan, and the dealer ghosted me. I’d take some blow by over that any day!
Blow by: a healthy sign depending on who you ask. Little blow by is healthy for you, lots of blow by keeps your mechanic healthy. Perspective!
My 6.4 was the worst truck I’ve ever owned. It was in the shop more than on the road. I kept up with all the maintenance, but it was a money pit. Hopefully, your experience is better, but I’d recommend selling it while you can.
