Ford F-150 To Drop 3.0L Power Stroke Diesel Engine

Ford has announced that the 3.0L Power Stroke Diesel engine will no longer be available for the F-150. The decision has sparked discussions about its relevance in the current truck market, particularly with the rise of hybrid and electric powertrains. The engine, introduced as a competitor in the diesel half-ton market, is being phased out due to limited consumer demand and advancements in alternative technologies like the PowerBoost hybrid and the upcoming Lightning electric truck. What are your thoughts on this move?

Tbh. I’m not surprised. The 3.0 never seemed to be an engine Ford was actually interested in but rather something they made just because FCA had a diesel half-ton.

You also get better torque figures and better average mileage with the new PowerBoost hybrid, for the same price too.

@Trevor
And less pollution too.

That’s a con for some truck owners.

No DEF or regen which are the ultimate enemies of diesel owners.

It’s tough being a diesel motor in a non-commercial class vehicle these days. Between all the tech required to make it pass emissions coupled with the bigger upfront cost, maintenance, and the fact that gasoline motors have narrowed the towing margins significantly, I have a feeling diesels won’t be around much longer for everyday consumers.

@Aldrin
The diesel car sales in Europe are also declining quickly as governments push hard for EVs and drop incentives for diesel. Since the VW dieselgate scandal, the diesel passenger car market is dying.

I’ve only ever seen one come through our dealership. They just aren’t very common or desired. People want four powerplants: the 5.0, 3.5, 2.7, and PowerBoost hybrid. Nothing else sells. If people want diesel, they get a Super Duty. The 3.0 isn’t even more powerful than the gas counterparts, so there’s no real market for it.

Diesel is not the way forward. Hybrid and electric is where half-tons are going.

This was pretty predictable the moment they announced it. Very expensive with very marginal benefits and major drawbacks compared to any of the other engines.

Six engines (seven if you count the Lightning) is a lot for one vehicle. I can definitely see why they’d drop the diesel.

I’m not surprised. It was one of the most expensive engines in the lineup, only had 250 hp, and had a tow rating lower than the 3.5EB. I don’t remember the source, but I read somewhere that the 3.0 Power Stroke only made up about 2% of F-150 sales.
