Anyone else have trouble with a no crank no start on their 04 6.0?

Trying to rule out the pricey stuff first. What should I check?

No FICM sync? Double-check that your connectors are tight and haven’t come loose.

I just noticed that too. Hoping it’s the FICM. Anything is better than dealing with the IPR.

@Tyler
IPR isn’t too bad, just be glad you don’t have an 03!

Yeah, I’ve heard the 03s are way worse to work on.

Oh, for sure. On the 03s, the ICP is buried behind the IPR, way harder than the 04.5+ where it’s right on the valve cover.

I posted this on your other thread, but here’s a diagnostic guide: Powerstroke Manual 2004. Shops literally use this to figure out no start issues. It walks you through pinpoint tests and what to check.

Also, for FICM sync, here’s what needs to happen:

  1. ICP PSI above 500 (note: this is what the ECM reads, not always actual)
  2. CAM sync
  3. Crank sync
  4. No KAM codes (like P0603)
  5. EBP sensor working
  6. FICM and ECM talking to each other
  7. Wiring is good
  8. ECM is fine

@Harlan
This forum brings back memories… definitely miss these kinds of discussions.

What was it like before this happened? Have you done any recent repairs? Batteries good?

Batteries are fine, averaging 13 volts. It was running perfect, then I shifted from reverse to drive in a parking lot, and suddenly it just died like someone cut the power.

This isn’t a no crank no start. It cranks but doesn’t fire. Based on your numbers, it’s not an HPO leak, so I’d bet it’s electrical.

Check the FICM connections. If you were working on the truck recently, make sure you didn’t unplug or damage the cam sensor or its wiring.

Do you hear the injectors click when you turn the key on?

@Jesse
It only cranks if I jump the terminal. Key does nothing.

Injectors do move, so I’m thinking maybe the neutral safety switch?

Could also be the ignition switch. Don’t forget to check your relays too.

If it doesn’t crank, isn’t it obvious it won’t start?

Anyway, check the starter relay fuse in the cab. If it’s blown, replace it. If it keeps blowing, get under the truck and check the small power wire to the starter solenoid. I had mine short out due to broken strands hidden under the shrink wrap. Took forever to figure out!

@Blair
There’s a pic showing it cranks but doesn’t fire. Not really a no crank no start.

Guess OP just likes saying ‘no crank no start’ for drama.

@Blair
Not the fuses, lol.

Check the wiring for the cam position sensor. I had a similar issue where water got in through a crack in the plastic harness. Cleaned everything with electronics cleaner and resealed it. Also replaced the sensor o-rings. Once I did that, the truck started like a champ.

The wiring harness has foil wrapping and a ground wire to protect it from interference. Oh, and clean the area too—mine was so gunked up it might’ve been shorting the sensor. Hope this helps!

@Reagan
Yeah, my first thought too. How’s he saying no crank but showing 151 RPM? Hard to diagnose when the symptoms don’t match.

Lol, it cranks if I jump the terminal, but the key does nothing.
