Hi everyone! First-time poster here, hoping to get some advice.
We’re looking to buy a Ford Expedition from the 2009-2014 range as an upgrade from our 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander, which has over 210,000 miles, peeling paint, and just doesn’t look great anymore. The new car would primarily be for my father, who’s a realtor. We’re aiming for something more presentable and reliable.
I’d love to hear your experiences with these Expeditions. Specifically:
What should we look out for when shopping?
Are there common issues or maintenance costs to plan for?
Is the 5.4 Triton engine reliable?
How’s the fuel economy and driving experience?
Overall, would you recommend this as a good choice, or should we consider alternatives like the Lexus LX570?
I drive a 2014 King Ranch EL 4x4 with 140k miles. Here’s my experience:
Engine/Transmission: The 5.4 3-valve Triton engine is solid but has weak points like timing chain tensioners and cam phasers. Post-2010 models are better since Ford fixed some of these issues. Regular maintenance can get you past 200k miles easily.
Common Issues: Look out for timing-related problems and aluminum corrosion on the hood and tailgate. Check for any slapping noise from the timing chain.
Maintenance Costs: Parts are affordable because the Expedition shares many components with the F-150. I’ve replaced wheel hubs, an AC condenser, and 4x4 wheel ends—all manageable costs.
Fuel Economy: Don’t expect much—13 MPG city and 17 MPG highway if you’re lucky. It’s a big, heavy vehicle, so fuel efficiency isn’t its strong point.
It’s a great family vehicle with lots of space, comfort, and features. Just know that it’s not the most fuel-efficient or tech-forward SUV.
@Ariel
I also drive a 2014 and agree with MKL. One small gripe: the navigation system uses outdated discs for maps, which aren’t supported anymore. It’s minor but annoying. Otherwise, it’s been solid, and I love being able to haul full sheets of drywall with the tailgate closed.
If you’re looking for a status symbol, a used Expedition might not be the best choice. Something like a Lexus LX570 would probably make a bigger impression. That said, Expeditions are great if you prioritize space and utility.
@Kit
Good point! My dad loves big vehicles, and the Expedition seems to fit the bill. We’re also considering the Lexus LX570 for the luxury aspect. Any other recommendations for something that’s roomy and reliable but still has a nice look?
The 2009-2014 models are some of the best years for the Expedition—modern enough but not overly complex. The 5.4 Triton engine is solid, but you should budget for a timing job and an oil pump upgrade around 200k miles. Expect 10-13 MPG city and 15-17 MPG highway.
If fuel efficiency matters, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you need a durable and spacious SUV, it’s a great option.
I have a 2012 Limited EL with 13 MPG average. It’s been reliable overall, but I’ve had minor issues like a broken sunroof mechanism and leaky washer fluid tank (hard to replace). Despite that, I love the ride and functionality. If you need lots of space, it’s hard to beat.
I had a 2010 Expedition that I sold at 190k miles. Great truck overall. But if you’re looking for something more luxurious or status-worthy, a Lexus LX570 would be a better fit for your dad’s line of work.
I own a 2014 XLT EL with 155k miles. We had to replace the engine about a year ago (came with a three-year warranty). Overall, it’s been a fantastic vehicle. Let me know if you’re interested—I’m looking to sell it.
I’ve got a 2014 with 221,000 miles. It’s been reliable, but the body is showing its age due to rust (I’m in Minnesota). Interior is a bit worn from kids, but the engine runs like new. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it!
