6.4 Starter on 6.0 Powerstroke

Hi everyone, Could the 6.4 starter be used directly with a 6.0 engine? Does it work just as well as the original starter if I just bolt it on and hook it up? Is there anything else I should purchase to make sure the 6.4 starter will start the truck correctly? Just curious as to why the vehicle wouldn’t start due to the (not really) frigid temperature, considering that I destroyed the starter trying to start it in 50 degree weather.

This is for a 6.0-liter 2005 F250 XLT.

There was a surge in demand for 6.4 OE starters a while back when O’Reilly’s had a pricing error. You might find cheap new-in-box starters by checking Facebook 6.0 diesel groups or Facebook Marketplace. I saw people buying 20-30 starters at a time for $19 each, and alternators for $10. There are plenty of them available.

It will also operate with the 6.7 starter.

Yes, according to a YouTube video comparing the 6.0, 6.4, and 6.7 models, the 6.7 starter spins a bit faster.

I did this on my 2006 model. I ordered a 6.4 starter, and it bolts right in. I did have to shim it slightly, but it works great and spins the motor faster. It’s definitely worth it

Yes, this is a typical replacement upgrade for a 6.0 starter.

Nice, For the shim, how thick did you end up using?
