Looking to buy a 3/4 ton diesel, and I found a 6.4 Ford with 160,000 miles. I’ve heard the reputation these trucks have—are they really that bad, or is it just exaggerated?
are they really that bad?
They’re worse.
I bought a 6.4 from my in-law for $8,500 with around 195,000 kilometers. Sold it 2.5 years later with 237,000 kilometers. I spent about double the purchase price on repairs. Avoid it at all costs. Get a 7.3 or a 6.0—they might cost more upfront, but you’ll save on shop bills.
People trash the 6.0, but they’re not that bad in my opinion. A Dodge with its weak transmission or a Duramax with head gasket and injector issues isn’t much better. I like the 6.0’s bad rep, though—it means you can get them cheaper than a 7.3.
Yeah, the 6.0 has its issues, but it’s easier to work on compared to the 6.4. The 7.3 is in a league of its own—nothing else comes close.
A 6.7 with some weight loss would like a word.
No hate on the 6.7s—they’re great trucks. But they’re crazy expensive to buy and maintain. $200 oil changes are no joke.
True, but the 7.3’s lack of emissions equipment is a big reason it’s cheaper to maintain. Emissions systems are a nightmare on newer trucks.
Defending a 6.0 while talking about Duramax head gasket issues? Early Duramaxes had their flaws, sure, but comparing their gasket problems to the 6.0’s is a stretch. At least the Duramax’s issues weren’t caused by a head design flaw.
That’s exactly what I was afraid of.
Run, don’t walk.
What are you trying to say? lol
Run away, or you’ll end up walking.
Woof.
That’s deep.
You’ll have to walk because it’ll be stuck in the shop.
They’re absolute junk. Don’t buy one. They can’t be bulletproofed, and they’re always at risk of blowing up. Look for a well-maintained 6.0 or 7.3 instead.
There’s a reason Ford only used them for two years.
2008-2010.
Three years, but who’s counting?
