2000 7.3 with 421k miles… shudder at 50-60mph when lightly pressing throttle

It could be the bearings in the driveshaft.

That’s exactly what I was thinking too.

This sounds like a rear driveline issue. Torque converter is possible, but it should be fully locked by 35 mph. Since this happens at higher speeds, I’d check the following:

  • Balance your wheels
  • Inspect rear pads and rotors
  • Check wheel bearings
  • Replace the rear differential gear oil
  • Inspect your leaf springs
  • Look at the rear driveshaft

That 7.3 engine will outlast all of us. Rebuild it and it’ll keep working hard for you.

Check all your U-joints and the carrier bearing. My guess is a U-joint near the rear differential. Is your pinion seal leaking?

I checked all the joints, and they seem fine. Carrier bearing looks good too. I don’t hear or feel any obvious slop, but I’ll double-check the pinion seal.

Have you checked the driveshaft joints?

Yep, I crawled under and checked the joints and carrier bearing. Everything seemed fine.

Did you actually grab the driveshaft and try to move it side to side, or just look at it?

@Voss
I grabbed it and gave it a good shake to check.
