1996 7.3 cranking but no start… what’s wrong?

I shimmed all the injectors a few days ago and filled the HPOP to help it build pressure.

It still won’t start, even after charging the batteries 4 times. My ICP builds pressure over 500, IPW is over 2.0, and it cranks at 200rpm.

I tested the UCHV and it checked out. The harness from the IDM to the injectors was good too.

After all that, I pulled one injector to check for continuity. Oil and diesel drained out of it.

Any ideas on what I should do next?

Try plugging in the block heater for at least 4 hours. Check the fuel pressure too.

Oil temp is about 70°. It’s been plugged in since Thursday. I don’t have a fuel pressure gauge on my truck though.

Sounds like a fuel issue. Priming the pump and rails can be tricky. Run a buzz test to make sure the electrical system is working.

I just ordered a Forscan OBD2 adapter. It should arrive in a few days. I’ll let you know how the buzz test goes.

Had a 95 Power Stroke, and the cam sensor needed replacement every 45–60k miles. Easy fix, one bolt, left front of the engine. Check yours!

Thanks! I just replaced it. I’ll check again tomorrow after recharging the batteries.

The cam sensor wasn’t the issue. I ordered a scanner to try running a buzz test. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Dang… keep us updated.

Could be a fuel issue.

I thought so, but there’s fuel going to the injectors. No smoke out of the exhaust though.

What’s your fuel pressure?

@Rayne
I’ll check tomorrow after picking up a gauge.

I’m dealing with the same thing. Shimmed the injectors, replaced o-rings, IPR, and ICP. Still no smoke from the exhaust. I pulled the injectors and sent them to be rebuilt.

I’m thinking of removing the shim kit to see if that fixes it. Did you figure out why the shim kit caused issues? How much did the rebuild cost?

Check the fuel pressure. Most auto parts stores will let you rent a gauge (you pay for it, use it, then return it for a refund).

Also, check the FPR screen. Better yet, remove the whole regulator and clean the filter, screen, and ball. Watch a video on how to do it so you don’t lose any parts. If the o-rings are swollen, boil them or leave them in the sun to shrink, or just replace them.

@Fraser
Thanks for the tip! I’ll try that tomorrow.
