'04 F350 ran great for 1.5 hours… then lost all power, steering, brakes… what happened?

First off, what kind of test equipment do you have? Could be a fuel issue… try taking off the fuel filter cap to check if you’re getting fuel into the bowl (should fill up fast). Might also be high-pressure oil issues; these trucks can develop leaks in seals that lead to low oil pressure for injectors. You can check Fuel Injection Control Module (FICM) voltage—should be 12 volts going in and 48 volts out. If you look at the IPR, make sure it’s not 15% or 85%; ideally, it should be around 25%, and high pressure should hit at least 500 psi (I’ve seen trucks start at just above 400). The radiator hose coming off is a big issue, but since it cranks, let’s see what else could be missing to get it started.

I don’t have any equipment… Any recommendations on where to start? Might be able to borrow some gear.

Start with the basics. Pull off the fuel bowl cap and see if fuel is coming in. I also noticed your battery sounded weak in the video.

I work on these trucks, so I can help if you’re in SoCal?

@Wylie
We tried jumping it and even put in new batteries, no change. I’ll check the fuel. Thanks, but I’m up in Portland, OR, so a bit far!

Got it, no worries! Check for fuel in the bowl first, and if that’s good, find a way to test high-pressure oil while cranking—it needs to hit 500 psi. If that’s good, check the FICM voltage and make sure it’s 12v in, 48v out. Also, look for FICM sync status to say YES.

@Wylie
Replaced the HPOP around 40k miles ago and had a family friend double-check my work. Replaced all gaskets and made sure fluids were topped off.

Here come the ‘forum experts’ with all the answers…

Try spraying a little ether into the intake and see if it coughs. Sounds like it has compression, so it might just be the injectors not firing. Does the exhaust smell like diesel or have white smoke?

The video was with ether. It wouldn’t even crank without it.

@Ansel
Yikes… that’s not good. Sounds like the engine might be seized up. Have you tried turning it over manually with a bar?

Truck’s an hour away, so haven’t had time to try that yet. All the comments are making me a bit worried about what I’ll find when I do.
